Double Gauss Evolution / Zemax Surface Solves

By Scott Sparrold

A coworker, Dan Dillon, was inspired by some papers written in the 1980s by Dave Shafer. Dan implemented via Zemax surface solves. I wanted to share this information with my colleagues in EO China, so I recorded this video.

I also included the evolution of the Double Gauss since it is the basis for most modern, high performance camera designs. It was the perfect candidate to demonstrate these surface solves.

Update March 2012
I have been asked to share the Zemax files for this demonstration... so I posted them below.

"Starting Plates....ZMX" was the starting file with windows.
"Blind Optimization.....ZMX" was the final solution starting from plane parallel plates.
"Optimization and solves....ZMX" was the final solution obtained with initial solves and subsequent free optimization.
